MUSCAT: Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah) — the national agency overseeing the Sultanate of Oman’s solid waste sector — has formally adopted an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Policy setting out a unified framework that defines the company’s sustainability commitments, principles and accountability mechanisms.

According to be’ah’s newly released 2025 Sustainability Report, the policy was approved by the Board of Directors, marking what the company described as a significant milestone in embedding ESG considerations into corporate governance and decision-making. It defines ESG key performance indicators aligned with the ESG and Sustainable Finance Guidelines for Oman Investment Authority (OIA) Entities, ensuring consistency with shareholder requirements and serves as a reference point for ESG-related strategies and performance monitoring across the organisation.

To support implementation, be’ah has established a structured ESG governance framework spanning four tiers: the Board of Directors, which provides overall oversight and strategic direction; an ESG Committee overseeing performance and alignment with business priorities; an ESG Function leading implementation; and ESG Champions embedding ESG across departments.

As a key outcome of the ESG Committee’s quarterly meetings in 2025, the company endorsed the enrolment of Board members, the management team, committee members and ESG Champions in a certified ESG Practitioner Programme. The majority of ESG Champions completed the programme and obtained certification during the year, with enrolment of Board members, management team representatives and committee members formally scheduled for 2026.

Capacity-building extended beyond the company. A total of 72 participants attended external professional programmes delivered by be’ah to accelerate sustainability awareness across the wider market. These included the Certified Sustainability (ESG) Practitioner Programme, delivered with the Centre for Sustainability and Excellence over four sessions for 56 participants and a “Pathways to Net Zero” session delivered with the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals and supported by Oman Net Zero Centre, attended by 16 participants. A cooperation agreement with Oman Net Zero Centre was also established to integrate sustainability and decarbonisation principles into educational and awareness initiatives.

On materiality, be’ah conducts a comprehensive assessment every three years, with the most recent completed in 2023 using an impact-based approach consistent with GRI Standards (2021) and drawing on MSCI sector guidance and SASB standards. The resulting material topics span environmental, social, governance and economic pillars. The next comprehensive assessment is scheduled for 2026.

The company said stakeholder engagement — spanning OIA, government entities, employees, local communities, service providers, SMEs and academia — directly informs the materiality process and the prioritisation of sustainability topics.
